Infectious diseases and global disparities are hindering progress on SDGs

Infectious illnesses have a substantial influence on progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The COVID-19 pandemic and global disparity have hampered progress in health goals, revealing humanity’s interconnection and vulnerability to emerging infectious agents. To achieve the SDGs for health by 2030, global collaboration and partnerships in areas such as training, surveillance, research, and innovation must be strengthened. The adoption of the SDGs in 2015 established a framework for global action to promote people’s and the planet’s well-being. It contains a goal (SDG Target 3.3) to halt epidemics of illnesses including AIDS, TB, malaria, and neglected tropical diseases.
