About this Course

Scleritis and episcleritis cover a wide spectrum of presentations ranging from the innocuous (episcleritis) to vision and even life-threatening inflammatory conditions. An additional concern in developing nations is the frequent association with infections. In this course, we will cover different ocular and systemic clinical signs that should lead us to ordering the most appropriate investigations for our patients.

Meet the Faculty

DR. MERLE FERNANDES

Dr Merle Fernandes is the Network Director - Finance and Accounts, and is also the Director of LVPEI’s Centre of Excellence in Hyderabad - Kallam Anji Reddy Campus. A sought after cataract and refractive surgeon, she was earlier the Director of LVPEI’s tertiary campus in Visakhapatnam - GMR Varalakshmi campus - from 2008 to June 2021, and also Medical Director of the Mohsin Eye Bank located at the campus. She is best known for her work in the area of corneal infections and corneal diseases affecting children. Dr Fernandes completed her under-graduate and post-graduate training at Goa Medical College, Goa, and did a fellowship in Cornea and Anterior Segment at LVPEI, Hyderabad. Dr Fernandes joined LVPEI as a tenured faculty in 2002 and subsequently as full-time faculty in 2005. Later, she also completed a post-doctoral fellowship in Ocular Surface Immunology under the mentorship of Professor Reza Dana at Schepens Eye Research Institute, Harvard Medical School, Boston.Dr Fernandes has a keen interest in research, and has widely published in international and national peer reviewed journals, and has presented several papers in India and abroad. She is a reviewer for several journals like the British Journal of Ophthalmology, Ophthalmology, Cornea and Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology. She is actively involved in the Cornea fellowship training program and has mentored several budding corneal surgeons.

DR. AVINASH PATHENGAY

Dr. Avinash Pathengay is consultant in vitreo-retina and uveitis at the GMRV Campus of LV Prasad Eye Institute, and Director, Academy for Eye Care Education. He has published extensively on infectious endophthalmitis and various forms of infectious uveitis. He has been the 'teacher of teachers' for the LVPEI uveitis service and continues to be actively involved in fellowship training in retina and uveitis.

Peter McCluskey is currently Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology and Eye Health at Faculty of Medicine and Health The University of Sydney and is the Director of the Save Sight Institute at Sydney Eye Hospital. Peter McCluskey is an internationally recognised inflammatory eye disease specialist with more than 30 years experience treating patients with vision threatening inflammatory eye disease. He is an author of more than 250 peer reviewed papers, 24 book chapters, 2 apps and 4 books. His H-index is currently 40. He is a dedicated teacher who has lectured and is a principal invited speaker at conferences around the world. Peter McCluskey has received distinguished service awards from APAO, RANZCO and AAO for his teaching contributions. He runs the largest tertiary referral, public sector uveitis service in Australia, at Sydney Eye Hospital and is involved in clinical research, laboratory research and clinical trials. As Director of the Save Sight Institute at Sydney Eye Hospital, he has oversight of eight research groups involved in both clinical and basic eye research that encompasses the common causes of blindness such as ARMD, diabetic retinopathy, cataract, corneal disease and genetically determined eye disease.

DR. SOMSHEILA MURTHY

Dr. Somasheila Murthy is an alumna of BYL Nair Charitable Hospital in Mumbai and has done her specialisation in ophthalmology at Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College, Mumbai. She has done her clinical fellowships in cornea from LVPEI, and uveitis & ocular pathology from Doheny Eye Institute at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, USA, before joining LVPEI as a faculty. She has over 14 years of rich experience as a full time faculty at LVPEI and is one of the most sought after surgeons. Her research interests include uveitis, anterior segment inflammation and clinical research. Dr Murthy has a passion for teaching and takes an active interest in various doctor-training programs; which include phacoemulsification training, teaching programs for DNB students and fellows at LVPEI. She heads the cornea fellowship program and is also an active member of the administrative teams for the clinical research and internal quality control at LVPEI. Apart from her clinical work, she is passionate about mentoring women entrepreneurs and participating in team building activities.
