Role of ayurveda in treating diabetes.

Ayurveda in treating diabetes, diabetes is a metabolic disease that causes high blood sugar. The hormone insulin moves sugar from the blood into your cells to be stored or used for energy. With diabetes, your body either doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t effectively use the insulin it does make. Untreated high blood sugar from diabetes can damage your nerves, eyes, kidneys, and other organs.

Ayurveda has described diabetes as ‘Madhumeha’. Ayurveda in treating diabetes means, phlegm (Kapha), Heat (Pitta), and toxic mucous (Aama) create blockages in the pancreas and it stops the secretion of insulin. It is known as insulin resistance. It causes an increase in sugar levels in the blood or urine. Some common symptoms are feeling thirsty, often urinating, feeling very hungry or tired, unexpected weight loss, dry or itchy skin, numbness and tingling sensation, and blurry vision.

DIABETES IS A MORE PROFOUND LEVEL TREATMENT PLAN THAT FOCUSES ON THREE LEVELS:
Detoxification: The first focus is to improve metabolism and remove blockages through a special anti-clog detoxifying treatment.
Repairing and restoring: The second focus is the rejuvenation process with Rasayana herbs to improve and strengthen the pancreas functions and renew the cells and tissues. Thus, restoring the normal functions of all organs.
Maintenance: The third focus is to maintain blood sugar levels naturally under control. Herbal formulas and diet plans are recommended to control blood sugar levels naturally throughout our life.

Ayurveda in treating diabetes also involves the use of remedies that can help control blood glucose levels. Some of the popular herbs used in diabetes treatment in Ayurveda include:

  • Gymnema or Gurmar is one of the main herbs used to treat diabetes as it has the property of ‘destroying sugar’ by curbing the craving for sugar.
  • Fenugreek or Methi seeds have high fiber content and it regulates blood sugar levels.
  • Jamun is a fruit that helps to reduce blood sugar levels. It is one of the potent medicines used in Ayurveda.
  • Neem and Tulsi are two other common herbs that are helpful in treating diabetes as they help to improve insulin management by the body.
  • Giloy or Guduchi is yet another powerful herb that helps manage blood sugar levels and helps to improve general immunity.
