Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women around the world. An estimated 70,218 women died of breast cancer in India, for the year 2012, the highest in the world for that year. One cannot prevent breast cancer from happening, but the deaths due to it can certainly be stopped. Women are encouraged for self-detection of cancer by recognizing any abnormalities in their breasts and reporting it to a medical expert as soon as possible. Recently new health tech startups in India have been using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) for early detection of breast cancer. Three such startups are:

Niramai which is a Bengaluru based startup, started by Geeta Manjunath and Nidhi Mathur in 2016, intends at eradicating breast cancer by using AI method. Nirmai’s product Thermalytix that is one-third the cost of mammography detects cancer in a non-invasive, painless and radiation-free way. Today, it has nine US patents and one canadian patent and installed in over 30 hospitals and diagnostic centres across 10 Indian cities .

NoTouch BreastScan, a product of UE LifeSciences was first introduced outside India where it was highly appreciated and accepted. This Mumbai-based startup then introduced iBreastExam which is a non-invasive, portable, painless, and radiation-free device for screening in different settings in India. The device has a tactual sensor that inspects the shift in tissue elasticity between healthy tissue and a stiff lump. They also have micro-sensors that provide simultaneous feedback to the software and can detect anomalies that are as small as three millimeters.

OncoStem is another bengaluru based startup, founded by cell biology expert, Dr Manjiri Bakre. OncoStem systems are capable of diagnosing tissue abnormalities and identifying tumors that can advance into cancer. This proprietary lab testing system also digitizes historical medical records of patients which helps to create actionable insights for doctors to provide further care. The CanAssist Breast diagnosis helps patients and doctors to decide whether to opt for chemotherapy or forego chemotherapy.

Breast cancer is easily treated and usually curable when detected in the earliest of stages. These organizations are successful in providing the best way for detecting cancer and volunteering in providing an early treatment for it.
