Internationally-famous the Goan fashion designer, Wendell Rodricks died unexpectedly in the later part of Wednesday at the age of 59 at his residence in Colvale village in Goa. The information derived from the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Mapusa) Gajanan Prabhudesai revealed that the designer collapsed at home but the reason for the death is yet to be made known.
At the same time, reports by the news agency IANS suggest that Rodricks had been going through long term illness and became a fatality of it at 5:45 on the evening of Wednesday. According to sources in touch with the family affirmed that the funeral will take place in the afternoon at 3:30 pm on the 13th of February, Thursday.
The demise of Rodricks sent ripples throughout the entertainment industry, and various celebrities including Anushka Sharma, Malaika Arora, and Rahul Khanna paid tribute to the fashion designer in sentimental social media postings. Goa State Minister Vishwajit Rane posted on twitter that he was deeply grieved to hear about the abrupt death of his close friend and the phenomenal artist, Wendell Rodricks. His creativity in his job and talents cannot be replaced and shall always be of great value. The minister added that Rodricks will be really missed. Many other posts of appreciation and praise for Wendell Rodricks flooded the internet.
Awarded with the Padma Shri for his work, Rodricks was also an environmentalist and a gay rights activist. He was India’s founder in echo style and was attributed to launching the resort wear idea in India. The artist has rendered his Goan origins as an important feature of his work over the years.
In 2018 during an interview with India Today, he mentioned that for 17 years he had been garnering Goan costumes and it was his dream to build his legacy in the form of a Goan Costume Museum for his home state
