Virtual Reality in Ophthalmology training

Most published systematic reviews have targeted the usage of virtual reality (VR)/augmented reality (AR) technology in ophthalmology because it pertains to surgical training. To date, that is the first review that investigates the current state of VR/AR generation implemented extra extensively to the complete subject of ophthalmology. PubMed, Embase, and CINAHL databases had been searched systematically from January 2014 thru December 1, 2020. Studies that mentioned VR and/or AR because it pertains to the sector of ophthalmology and supplied information on the technology used had been considered. Abstracts, non–peer-reviewed literature, assessment articles, research that pronounced the most effective qualitative data, and studies without English translations had been excluded.

A general of 77 research had been protected on this assessment. Of these, 28 evaluated the usage of VR/AR in ophthalmology surgical training/evaluation and guidance, 7 in clinical training, 23 in diagnosis/screening, and 19 in treatment/therapy. 15 studies used AR, 61 used VR, and 1 used both. Most research has targeted the validity and usefulness of novel technologies. “Surgical education has always been in real life — apprenticeship, medical school, residency, fellowship — but COVID-19 accelerated the use of virtual education. We’re all used to video conferencing platforms, virtual conferences, webinars, videos and presentations where we can chat and ask questions,” S.K. Steven Houston III, MD,said at the Retina World Congress. “As more education goes virtual, new hardware and software can reshape how we interact virtually.” “You can easily toggle down and make it stereoscopic. It’s a very easy way to view 3D video,” he added.

Ophthalmology is a subject of drugs this is nicely suitable for the usage of VR/AR. However, similarly longitudinal research analyzing the sensible feasibility, efficacy, and protection of such novel technologies, the cost-effectiveness, and medical/criminal concerns are nevertheless needed. We trust that point will certainly foster similar technological advances and cause huge use of VR/AR in routine ophthalmic practice.
