Study Finds Link Between Vision Problems and Dementia in Older Adults
A new study published in JAMA Ophthalmology has found that older adults with vision problems, including distance acuity, near acuity, and contrast sensitivity, may be at a higher risk for developing dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease. The study analyzed data from the 2021 National Health and Aging Trends Study, involving 2,967 participants aged 71 and older. The more types of vision problems a person has, the higher the chances of developing dementia. The study’s unique approach used objectively measured visual acuity to analyze the associations between visual acuity and dementia. Eye health and brain health are closely linked in older adults, highlighting the importance of regular vision checkups for this population.
