India sees its Covid-19 cases, mostly driven by the fast transmitting Omicron variant, spiralling in the last one week. Doubling the cases every alternate day since January 2, India reported 1,41, 986 new cases in the last 24 hours ending 9 am on Saturday. The country also registered 285 deaths on Friday. Confirmed Omicron variant infection cases in India currently stand at 3071. Since detection of this variant needs genomic sequencing of the sample with a lag of two to three days , only selected cases are being confirmed for the specific virus variant. In addition, there is also gross under-reporting of Omicron cases as the majority are asymptomatic.
