Increased severe asthma exacerbation rates reported among female, Black, Hispanic and young adult patients
There is a disproportionate increase in severe asthma exacerbation levels reported among female, Black, Hispanic and younger adult patients. An observational study in subspecialist-treated, United States adults with severe asthma receiving biologic therapy and systemic corticosteroids found that the asthma exacerbation levels among female, Black, Hispanic and younger adult groups was much higher as compared to other groups. In the study report, published in International Journal of Asthma, the researchers said that among the 1884 enrolled patients, Black, Hispanic, and younger patients also experienced higher rates of asthma hospitalisations and these patients exhibited poorer symptom control and poorer health-related quality of life as well. With these findings, the researchers pointed out that female sex, Black race, Hispanic ethnicity, and younger age were important determinants of health, potentially attributable to physiologic and social factors. The researchers hope that this knowledge in severe asthma disease burden among subspecialist-treated patients may help optimise care for these groups of patients.
