Psychological intervention helps adherence to NIV in COPD
Psychological intervention is an appropriate treatment for acceptance for and adherence to non-invasive ventilation (NIV) in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in clinical practice. The latest study by a team of researchers from the Department of Psychology, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Milan and the Department of Psychology, Harvard University, found that psychological interventions would certainly help adapt to new treatments including NIV, which is often rejected or inappropriately used. The researchers conducted a two-branch randomised controlled trial with 90 patients with COPD who had an indication for NIV to find that the psychological intervention was related to improvements in both adherence to NIV (F(304) = 19.054, p < .001) and quality of life (F(156) = 10.264, p = .002) as compared to the control group.
