Targeted rehabilitation therapies (TRT) for diaphragmatic dysfunction in patients with COPD can improve diaphragm function, pulmonary ventilation function, dyspnea, and exercise capacity, suggests a narrative review carried out by a team of scientists from different Universities, including School of Rehabilitation Science, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, among others. The study, which summarised the characteristics, assessment methods and targeted rehabilitation therapies for diaphragm dysfunction in COPD, analysed literatures published in PubMed, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure Database, Wanfang, and SinoMed to find that diaphragmatic targeted rehabilitation therapies are significantly beneficial. At the same time, the researchers pointed out the need for direct, non-invasive and standardised assessment for diaphragm dysfunction as most studies only focused on the effects of diaphragm rehabilitation therapy in an indirect way.
