Strong links between gut microbiome and wheeze frequency
Gut microbiome features are closely linked to wheeze frequency in asthamtic children, contributing to morbidity in children, according to a recent study published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. The researchers, who analysed wheeze frequency by calculating the proportion of quarterly questionnaires between ages 3 and 5 years, found that intestinal Veillonella abundance was associated with more frequent wheeze with numerous faecal metabolites. The findings suggest significant functional potential and clinical relevance for this genus. The study found that children with asthma who wheezed more often demonstrated a shift in their faecal metabolomic composition, including enrichment with histidine metabolites.
