Covid-19 mortality risk higher among smokers
The mortality risk in COVID-19 is higher among smokers than non-smokers, suggests a recent analytical study conducted by a team of scientists from Vinayaka Mission Kirupananda Variyar Medical College and Hospital, Salem. The researchers said that they analysed 401 individuals to find that among the 45.1 percent of smokers in the population, 15.7 percent have died despite effective treatment. Stressing the need for further research on the impact of smoking on COVID-19, the team pointed out there is an urgent need for anti-smoking campaigns and public policy measures.
