Bronchiolitis strongly linked to respiratory morbidities
The prevalence of asthma was higher among participants who had been hospitalised with bronchiolitis in infancy compared with the controls, suggests a study published in BMJ Open Respiratory Research. The study, conducted by Karen Galta Sørensen, a PhD candidate in the department of paediatrics at Stavanger University Hospital, and colleagues, in Norway found that long-term outcomes of bronchiolitis in infancy gets extended into more obstructive lung function patterns in adulthood, including a higher prevalence of asthma. The researchers also noted that those who had been hospitalised with bronchiolitis did not have more frequent atopy compared with controls.
