India on course to become global hub for medicines
Dr. VG Somani, Drug Controller General of India (DCGI), asserted that India is on track to become a "global centre for medicines," citing a fourfold increase in the use of investigational new pharmaceuticals in the country.
Somani noted at the Indian Drug Manufacturers' Association (IDMA) Annual Conclave, "We are seeing utilizations of exploratory novel drugs." Previously, there were just 5-10 applicants. There are currently 23 applications ready to go for the investigational new treatment, which is a remarkable achievement for our country.
He believes that the Made in India drugs would have an impact and will reach the rest of the world soon.
While making decisions about immunizations and treatments, the DCGI official also made sense of how drug regulators work.
Through the ICMR, ICH stage, and other mechanisms, we have maintained regular touch with the WHO and all world controllers. Preliminaries are one of the phases in the approval process for vaccinations and drugs. That's how we've dealt with remdesivir. He went on to say that there is no single stage at which decisions must be made.
He went on to say that India has been viewed as the world's pharmacy, and that we need to transform into the world's all-encompassing drug store in order for our actual potential to be recognised.
