Photodynamic Therapy to Treat Hidradenitis Suppurativa

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a non-invasive treatment that makes use of light treatment along with the side application of a photosensitizing agent. In dermatology, photodynamic therapy is typically used and permitted for the treatment of oncological situations which includes actinic keratosis, Bowen disease, and superficial basal cell carcinoma. In the last 2 decades, however, PDT has also been used for the treatment of numerous nonneoplastic dermatological diseases. The present review summarizes posted information on PDT utility in skin appendage disorders. In literature evaluation suggests that: (a) PDT can be an appropriate remedy for acne, folliculitis decalvans, hidradenitis suppurativa, nail diseases, and sebaceous hyperplasia; (b) there may be a lack of agreement on photodynamic therapy features (type, concentrations, and incubation length of used substances, variety and frequency of photodynamic therapy sessions, premier parameters of mild sources, and affected person characteristics [e.g., failure to previous treatments, disease severity, body surface area involved, etc.] which have to manual PDT use in those diseases); (c) in addition studies is wanted to set up global guidelines assisting dermatologists to select PDT for the proper affected person on the proper time.

the proof assisting using light-based therapies for HS is limited. There are 2 main groupings of those therapies consistent with whether a photosensitizer is used or not. In 1 group, for which only a low-moderate level of evidence is available, the authors implemented Nd: YAG laser, CO2 laser, or IPL. In the other, for which the excellent evidence is also low-moderate, PDT (with photosensitizer) became used. Thus, all of the remedies reviewed used light but they are not comparable: exceptional strategies have different mechanisms of action. However, effects for person treatments do appear to signify that approaches that provide more penetration — whether or not using intralesional application or lasers — cause better results.
