Glaucoma prevalance in West Africa finds a survey

Recently a few surveys were done on glaucoma prevelance in West Africa. Large population-based studies such as the Baltimore Eye Survey and Barbados and Saint Lucia have shown that glaucoma poses three times the threat of other ethnic groups to people of African descent with a higher prevalence, younger and older age of onset-the progression of a serious illness. Glaucome prevalance has been found on African descent.

Previous studies in East Africa and South Africa 4.5 reported a lower incidence of primary angle-closure glaucoma (POAG) compared to studies in North America.

Before TES, only 1 glaucoma study was conducted in East Africa, 2 in South Africa and none in West Africa. “The initially identified types of glaucoma were POAG 94.5%, chronic narrow-angle glaucoma 2.5%, traumatic glaucoma 1.9% and others, including uveitic, mixed, steroid-induced and unspecified glaucoma in 1.1%,” he said. He also noted that there was no pseudoglaucoma peeling. Overall comparison of the prevalence of POAG in the population in this study with other studies showing glaucome prevalence similar to those reported in Barbados and Saint Lucia, and almost double the prevalence found in East Africa, South Africa and America.

“We believe the study population is very similar to the Caribbean population in terms of the incidence of glaucoma, which may be related to the migration from West Africa to the Caribbean during the years of the slave trade and lack of education. – said Budenz.

The remarkable finding of this study is that only about 3% of patients with glaucoma knew they had the disease, in contrast to similar studies in developed countries, in which 50% of patients were identified with glaucoma, of which they knew what they were. Disease.

Researchers tested 1200 people who had previously had normal results using the same methods, and they also tried to retest 362 people, initially at the clinic, who was diagnosed with glaucoma. To diagnose and treat glaucoma  best treatments for this population, include selective laser blepharoplasty, mitomycin C ophthalmectomy, glaucoma tube implantation and cyclic coagulation.

Research shows that 57.5 million people worldwide suffer from primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). “The severity of glaucoma begins at an earlier age and is more aggressive in blacks than in whites and Asians,” the researchers note in their study.

Prevalence generally increases with age, and POAG is strongly correlated with age; Researchers reported higher rates of glaucoma in Hispanics and Hispanics (18%), Blacks (15%), Caucasians (7%), and Asians seniors (5%).

The rate of glaucoma prevalance in African countries is generally low because “screening in African countries may have limited diagnostic potential”. In general, the incidence is higher in West Africa than in South Africa, where the incidence is higher than in East Africa.

Research shows that the average patient with glaucoma prevalance an additional $ 2,903 in total annual health care costs and $ 2,599 more in outpatient costs than patients without intraocular pressure.
