Acute kidney injury increases risk of mortality

A new study suggests that the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) may be a useful marker for predicting mortality in patients with acute kidney injury (AKI). The study, which was published in the Journal of Nephrology, found that patients with AKI who had a higher PLR had a higher risk of mortality.

The researchers analyzed data from 501 patients with Acute Kidney Injury who were admitted to a hospital in China. They found that patients with a PLR of 150 or higher had a significantly higher risk of mortality compared to those with a PLR below 150. The study also found that the PLR was a better predictor of mortality than other commonly used markers, such as the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and the C-reactive protein level.

The findings suggest that the PLR could be a useful tool for clinicians in predicting the risk of mortality in patients with AKI. Further research is needed to confirm these results and to determine how the PLR could be used in clinical practice.
