Adenovirus infection linked to blood clots and low platelets

Platelets are blood fragments that form blood clots in the event of an injury. Platelet levels can be reduced by conditions such as infections and illnesses. Adenovirus infection, which produces typical cold symptoms, has been linked to blood clots and low platelets, according to researchers. They detected two individuals with significant blood clotting and low platelets who had been infected with an adenovirus. Platelet factor 4 (PF4), which is secreted by platelets and can cause platelet loss, was the focus of their antibodies. This syndrome is similar to vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT), which can arise after receiving certain COVID-19 vaccinations. The researchers determined that the patients’ adenovirus infections induced a VITT-like condition. This revelation opens the door to more study into how and why this illness arises, as well as who is most vulnerable.
