Study finds close link between traffic-related air pollution and rampant pediatric asthma

Traffic related air pollutants, mainly nitrogen dioxide (NO2), puts children at risk of developing asthma and the problem is especially acute in urban areas. A recent study conducted by Susan Andberg and team from the Georgia Washington University found that nearly 2 million new pediatric asthma cases every year could be caused due to this traffic related air pollutant. The researchers said that NO2 could be the prominent cause of exacerbated asthma levels and that out of the estimated 1.85 million new pediatric asthma cases attributed to NO2 globally in 2019. Two-thirds of these cases occurred in urban areas, particularly big cities around the world. The study is the first to estimate the burden of pediatric asthma cases caused by this pollutant in more than 13,000 cities from Los Angeles to Mumbai. At the same time, the team also pointed how the recent clean air regulations in the first world countries have led to an immediate drop in pediatric cases, urging governments from around the world to follow the same.
