Air pollution in chronic respiratory disease

Air pollution has become the second biggest cause of chronic respiratory disease deaths after smoking, according to a recent report. The study, published in the European Respiratory Journal, found that long-term exposure to outdoor air pollution is responsible for more than half a million deaths annually from chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma, bronchitis and emphysema.

The report analyzed data from 41 countries across Europe and found that the highest death rates were recorded in Central and Eastern Europe. Pollution has also been linked to an increased risk of lung cancer, heart disease and stroke.

The findings underscore the urgent need for action to address pollution, including reducing emissions from vehicles and industry, promoting public transport and active travel, and increasing green spaces in cities. The study also highlights the need for individual action, such as reducing car use and using clean energy sources.
