American College of Cardiology, AHA release new guidelines for chronic coronary disease
The American College of Cardiology (ACC) and American Heart Association (AHA) have released new guidelines for the diagnosis, treatment, and management of chronic coronary disease (CCD). These guidelines, which are an update to previous versions published in 2012 and 2014, define CCD as any long-term vascular or heart condition that causes inadequate blood flow to or from the heart. This includes patients with chronic chest pain, a history of myocardial infarction, or those who have undergone coronary stent or bypass surgery. The guidelines emphasize that CCD is now a highly manageable disease, thanks to advancements in both healthy lifestyle habits and medical therapy. Cardiologist Salim S. Virani, MD, PhD, who chaired the committee responsible for the guidelines, expressed optimism about the improved prognosis for CCD patients. The full document is available in both the Journal of the American College of Cardiology and Circulation.
