Aspartame: A Popular Artificial Sweetener Declared Potential Carcinogen by WHO
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), aspartame, a widely used artificial sweetener present in a variety of goods, has been designated as a probable carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). The IARC’s evaluation shows that safety at routinely used levels is not a serious issue, although possible side effects have been identified that require more research. WHO committees advise adults to ingest no more than 40 mg/kg body weight per day. Cancer is a prominent cause of mortality worldwide, and aspartame evaluations attempt to minimize these numbers and the human toll. The Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) of the World Health Organization and the Food and Agriculture Organization makes recommendations on how much of a product a person should ingest. While each did complimentary but independent reviews.
