Record rise in COPD and asthma cases in Pune due to poor quality air

The Indian city of pune reported at least 20 percent increase in the number of new COPD and asthma cases as the air quality of the city deteriorated. According to data furnished by System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), Pune city is expected to have poor air quality in the week of Christmas. Medical practitioners in the city have pointed out how winter months in the city regularly see an increase in COPD cases due to reduction in day and night temperatures, which act as triggers for exacerbations. Most cases of rising lung and respiratory diseases, particularly asthma and bronchospasm, were reported in locations such as Shivaji Nagar, Bhosari, Alandi and a few other suburbs.
