
Autistic people have shorter lifespans than the general population
Autistic people have worse physical and mental health than the general population and live substantially shorter lives, dying 16 to 30 years earlier on average. While many medical illnesses are more frequent among autistic people, the impact of autism-specific healthcare barriers should not be overlooked. Because of these limitations, autistic people’s needs are not being served sufficiently, contributing to their higher death rate.
