Bariatric surgery may prevent cancer in obese people – study at Digestive Disease Week
A retrospective research presented at Digestive Disease Week 2023 discovered that bariatric surgery may protect against the development of obesity-related malignancies. The study, which included over 55,000 patients, found that persons with obesity who underwent bariatric surgery had around half the chance of acquiring these cancers when compared to matched control patients who did not undergo surgery. The findings add to the growing body of data that the large weight reduction associated with bariatric surgery may have a cancer-prevention benefit. The study looked at a retrospective cohort from the TriNetX multi-institutional database, which had data on over 107 million patients. Adults with a BMI more than 35 kg/m2 who underwent or did not have bariatric surgery were identified and risk-matched.
