Cigna, eviCore Healthcare pilot program for oncology pathways
Clinical pathways in oncology have the potential to enhance cancer care by lowering costs while preserving quality. Cigna and eviCore Healthcare collaborated to create the Oncology Value-based paths program, which includes 51 therapeutic paths for treating 50% of malignancies. They wanted to give advice to physicians while also ensuring that patients received cheap treatment. In January 2021, the program was introduced for a big commercial population. The route regimen rate increased by 5.2% during an 18-month period, saving $24 million. Direct talks with clinicians who ordered off-pathway therapies resulted in 18.3% of cases being updated to on-pathway regimens. Overall, 28.3% of patients were finally switched to on-pathway regimens, indicating that the initiative had a broader educational impact than merely provider talks.
