Moderate coffee consumption aids asthma control

Moderate coffee consumption can lower the frequency of symptoms associated with asthma, reveals a recent study by a medical team at Korea’s Hallym University, and Kangdong Sacred Heart Hospital. The researchers analysed over 160,000 participants from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study—3,146 with asthma and 158,902 with no history of asthma —  to find that drinking one cup of coffee once or twice a day was associated with protective effects against asthma in a Korean population. The presence of methylxanthines in coffee could be the reason behind this, which also explains the absence of the same results on green tea or soda. However, the researchers advised caution as coffee has a temporary ameliorative effect on lungs.
