Comparison of Inflammatory Bowel Disease Patients with SARS-CoV-2 Infection between Two Pandemic Waves in Italy: Higher Rates of Negative Outcomes in the First Wave

This study compared the characteristics and outcomes of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and SARS-CoV-2 infections between two pandemic waves in Italy. The first wave occurred from March to May 2020, while the second wave took place from September to December 2020. The study enrolled 937 IBD patients, with 219 in the first wave and 718 in the second wave. Patients in the first wave were older, more likely to have ulcerative colitis, and had more comorbidities. They also resided more frequently in Northern Italy. However, there were no significant differences between the waves in terms of gender or frequency of active IBD. The rates of negative outcomes were significantly higher in the first wave compared to the second wave. This included higher rates of pneumonia, hospital admission, ventilatory support, and death.
