Increased prevalence of COPD among those exposed to pesticides: Study

Increased prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) was found among those exposed to pesticides, in a recent research in the UK.  A large study conducted using the UK Biobank data found that there is an increased risk of at least 13 percent of COPD among those exposed to pesticides.  The study, published in Thorax,  also showed that, the longer your exposure, the more at risk you are of developing COPD. The researchers, who aimed at analysing occupational exposures and risks of COPD among the working population,  said that patients who would be considered as having “healthy lungs’, like those who don’t smoke or don’t have asthma, showed this trend. Medical experts have highlighted the importance of the study and pointed out the need for further research as there are more things to be examined and more ethnic minorities to be incorporated.
