COPD patients die of first case of fungus strain aspergillus lentulus at AIIMS

In the first case of aspergillus infection being reported in India, deaths of two COPD patients have been confirmed in the country. The patients, who were under treatment at New Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), died of aspergillus lentulus, a drug-resistant fungal strain. The patients were in their late 50s and early 4os.

According to emerging reports, this is the first case of Aspergillus being reported in India. Previous research has established that aspergillus lentulus is a human pathogen that causes infection in the lungs and has a high fatality rate, generating invasive illness.

Medical experts have advised precaution as aspergillus are found in the soil and degraded materials and their spores in the air affect immunocompromised people into developing a fatal infection.
