Covid-19 inoculation drive for children starts from today; Cities have geared up for maximum coverage

India’s vaccination drive covering the young aged between 15 to 18 years has been started from Monday after the the government announced the initiative in the wake of the onset of third wave of the pandemic and also with increased threat by Omicron variant of the virus.  The Union Health Ministry had last week announced that Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin will be the one that will be administered to eligible children. The vaccine will be administered in two doses with a gap of 28 days between.  Meanwhile, main cities have geared up for covering the maximum number of registered children with the inoculation as per the availability of the doses. Pune, civic health officials said that a total of 10,000 doses of Covaxin vaccine are available at Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC)-run centres, while in Delhi, 159 sites in government hospitals, primary healthcare centres, and government schools have been set up. The drive will be expanded Tuesday in a “camp mode” at private schools if more than 500 children are ready to get the shot, said the local authorities in Delhi.
