India guidelines for Covid-19 vaccination of children recommends only Covaxin; Precaution dose for aged to start from Jan 10

India’s Ministry of Health has released the guidelines for Covid-19 vaccination of children aged between 15 and 18, and precautionary dose for people aged 60 years and above with comorbidities. The guideline, which recommends only Covaxin – an inactivated vaccine made by Bharat Biotech – for vaccination in children, says that the campaign will start from January 3.  As far as the additional dose for the aged with comorbidities is concerned, the guideline insists that the prioritization and sequencing of this ‘precaution dose’ would be based on the completion of 9 months i.e. 39 weeks from the date of administration of 2nd dose and will be on advice from a doctor. All citizens irrespective of their income status are entitled to free COVID-19 vaccination at government vaccination centres and those who have the ability to pay are encouraged to use private hospitals’ vaccination centres, the guideline said.
