Covid 1st wave saw 53% surge in inhaler prescription in UK

The first wave of Covid-19 in the UK witnessed a 52.55 percent increase in prescription of corticosteroid inhalers (ICS). The ICS prescription growth was just 3.92 percent in 2019. The most highly prescribed ICS inhaler in March 2019 and 2020 was Clenil Modulite 100 mcg, and Fostair 100/6 was the most highly prescribed LABA-ICS in both years. There was a 212.96 percent increase in Clenil Modulite prescriptions in March 2020 and 170.78 percent increase in Fostair 100/6 prescriptions. Patients significantly associated with receiving higher inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) prescriptions were younger, of higher socioeconomic status, and had milder asthma. The study also observed that while the medications increased in general during the first wave, the largest change was seen in asthma medications.
