Trial finds direct link between dental hygene and COPD exacerbations
A randomized control trial led by a team of scientists in Sweden has found that advanced dental cleaning could potentially reduce the risk of COPD exacerbations as infections from oral microbiome often leads to the same.
The researchers said that they analysed the data of 101 primary care COPD patients over a course of 12 months to find that the frequency of exacerbations was significantly lower with a p value (probability) of 0.039 while for the rest of the cohort, it was at 0.020. They concluded that regular periodontal examination and dental cleaning may be of clinical importance to prevent COPD exacerbations.
