Dermatologists Prescribe More Topical Corticosteroids Than Family Physicians
According to a study published in JAMA Dermatology, dermatologists are more likely to prescribe topical corticosteroids than family physicians. The study analyzed data from over 26,000 patient visits in the United States between 2001 and 2016. Researchers found that dermatologists prescribe topical corticosteroids in 47.3% of patient visits, while family physicians prescribed them in only 12.4% of patient visits. Topical corticosteroids are commonly used to treat skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. The study suggests that there may be a need for more education and training for family physicians regarding the use of these medications.
