Dietary Protein Intake and Cirrhosis-Related Mortality: A Prospective Cohort Study
A recent study published in BMC Gastroenterology emphasizes the relevance of dietary protein consumption in cirrhotic individuals. The researchers from Tehran University of Medical Sciences did the study to investigate the association between different forms of protein consumption and mortality risk in cirrhotic patients. The researchers discovered that eating more total and dairy protein was linked to a lower risk of cirrhosis-related death. Increased consumption of animal protein, on the other hand, was linked to an increased risk of death. These relationships were more strong in patients with more severe disease severity. Furthermore, the study found a non-significant inverse relationship between vegetable protein consumption and mortality risk. The researchers concluded that further study is needed to identify the appropriate levels of key nutrients.
