Dimethylfumarate may prevent blood clotting after infections: study
Dimethylfumarate, a drug used to treat psoriasis and multiple sclerosis, may also be effective in preventing blood clotting complications during infections. The study found that dimethylfumarate and a related experimental drug called 4-OI can stop abnormal clotting by decreasing the production of a clotting factor called tissue factor. The drugs work by blocking interferons that promote the release of tissue factor. Experiments in mice showed that the drugs could prevent life-threatening clotting caused by infections with bacteria like E. coli and S. aureus, as well as the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The findings suggest that dimethylfumarate could potentially be used to treat disseminated intravascular coagulopathy, which sometimes occurs after severe infections.
