Max Hospital performs rare double lung transplant with ECMO support in Covid patient

Max Hospital at Saket, Delhi successfully transplanted both lungs in a Covid patient with the help of extended extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support. The 55-years old patient was suffering from damaged lungs due to coronavirus and the only option left for doctors was double lung transplant. ECMO life support, a form of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) that has been developed to provide prolonged support of heart or lung function, though now considered for a wider cohort of patients on a case-by-case basis, is still not that widely experimented in India.
