Evidence on impact of pulmonary rehabilitation and exercise still poor: Review

Even though understanding the impact of exercise on oxidative stress in COPD could lead to tailored exercise programs and modification of pathological mechanisms, latest studies still fail to identify high-quality evidence to determine this. A systematic review published in PubMed, conducted by a team of medical scientists from the UK, says that they found no conclusive evidence regarding the positive effects of exercise on COPD. The researchers, who analysed over 1,710 records and 1,117 records after duplicate removal and included 6 studies in the final stage, added that the evidence available was low quality and four of the studies had a high risk of bias and two studies had an unclear risk of bias and that studies were small (15-56 participants). Therefore, articulating the need for further research in this domain, the team wrote that larger, standardized, and high quality randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are essential to determine the relative impact of different exercise interventions on redox status to guide COPD management.
