Fetoscopic surgery for open neural tube defects may ease obstetrical problems: study
According to new research published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, hybrid fetoscopic repair can lessen obstetrical problems. Open neural tube defects (ONTDs), such as spina bifida, afflict between 6 and 10,000 live births globally. Fetal surgery has demonstrated better results than postnatal repair, and fetoscopic ONTD repair offers advantages such as reduced risks of uterine weakening and dehiscence as well as the prospect of future vaginal birth. However, there is presently no standardized way to compare fetoscopic ONTD repair to postnatal repair. A retrospective cohort study was done at the Texas Children’s Fetal Center to address this. The Clavien-Dindo classification, which ranks surgical difficulties on a scale of 1 to 5, was employed by the researchers to assess maternal complications in fetal repair in utero.
