Genetic mutations in bone marrow causing CVD, COPD and others, reduces Alzheimer’s disease risk: Path study
Even as key genetic mutations in bone marrow stem cells increase the risk for a range of diseases, including blood cancer, cardiovascular disease and heart attacks, strokes, COPD, osteoporosis, among others, they also give protection from Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). A study conducted by a team of scientists under Dr Siddhartha Jaiswal, a pathology researcher, at Stanford University, found that these genetic changes might actually protect against the devastating neurodegenerative disorders. This new pathological study has raised questions regarding the potential therapies that can be used in future for combating AD. Pointing out the importance of Jaiswal’s work, medical experts said that the study could fuel future research on how such pathological mutations could prevent neurodegenerative disorders.
