Gut-Directed Hypnotherapy Improves Abdominal Pain, Stool Consistency in IBS
A recent study published in Gastroenterology highlights the positive effects of gut-directed hypnotherapy on abdominal pain and stool consistency in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The study involved a randomized controlled trial with 125 IBS patients who received either gut-directed hypnotherapy or a control intervention. The hypnotherapy sessions focused on reducing gut-related symptoms through relaxation techniques, imagery, and suggestions for symptom improvement. Results showed that the participants who underwent gut-directed hypnotherapy experienced significant improvements in abdominal pain and stool consistency compared to those in the control group. The hypnotherapy group reported a decrease in the severity and frequency of abdominal pain, as well as an improvement in stool consistency. These findings suggest that gut-directed hypnotherapy can be a beneficial non-pharmacological approach for managing symptoms of IBS.
