9th double hand transplant at Kochi’s Amrita Hospital

Doctors at Amrita Hospital in Kochi, Kerala, successfully performed a double hand transplant on a patient from Karnataka who lost both hands in an electrical accident. The organs were donated by parents of a 25-year-old Kerala youth, who suffered from an illness and was declared brain-dead in September 2021 at Kochi. This is the ninth double hand transplant conducted at Amrita Hospital since 2015. The complex but successful hand-transplant surgery, performed by a team of doctors led by Dr. Subramania Iyer and Dr. Mohit Sharma at the Center for Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, lasted 14 hours.
