Hearing aids lower risk of dementia in midlife and beyond: study

Hearing loss in midlife and beyond is a significant risk factor for cognitive decline and dementia. However, research shows that individuals with hearing loss who use hearing aids have a reduced risk of developing these conditions compared to those who do not use aids. In fact, their risk becomes similar to that of individuals without hearing loss. This finding holds true even after considering factors such as education, cardiovascular risk, and genetics. Nevertheless, it is still unclear whether the use of hearing aids prevents dementia or if those who use aids were simply less likely to develop the condition in the first place.
