Hepatitis C Virus: Infection, Symptoms, and Treatment Options

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a viral infection that causes inflammation and damage to the liver. It spreads through tainted blood and is frequently overlooked until symptoms arise. In the United States, roughly 2 million people are infected with HCV, with males aged 20-39 having the greatest infection rates. In 2020, HCV-related mortality increased by 4% over the previous year. Symptoms of HCV infection in the acute phase include jaundice, tiredness, nausea, and muscular pains. Some people are able to remove the virus on their own, while others enter the chronic phase. HCV symptoms include easy bleeding, lack of appetite, itchy skin, weight loss, and others. HCV testing is suggested for all persons aged 18 to 79, regardless of symptoms. Various diagnostic procedures may be used.
