High prevalence of comorbidities in cancer survivors

A recent study by a team of researchers led by Changchuan Jiang at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Centre in Buffalo, New York, found that there was a significant prevalence of comorbid chronic conditions among cancer survivors. The study, published in Cancer, observed increasing trends in the prevalence of hypertension, diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease, and morbid obesity among the 30,728 cancer survivors, while a decreased trend was found in prevalence for ischemic heart disease, COPD, and hepatitis. The researchers said that they had observed chronic conditions in cancer patients using the 2002 to 2018 National Health Interview Survey data that showed the need for collaboration between oncologists and primary care providers.
