Human Adenovirus Infection Causing Hyperinflammatory Syndrome Mimicking Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C): A Case Report
In a recent case report published on Cureus, a peculiar hyperinflammatory syndrome resembling Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) was observed in a child infected with human adenovirus. The report sheds light on this rare presentation of adenovirus infection, which typically causes respiratory and gastrointestinal symptoms. The patient exhibited fever, rash, conjunctivitis, and elevated inflammatory markers, resembling the clinical features of MIS-C. Diagnostic tests confirmed the presence of human adenovirus in the patient’s respiratory secretions and blood samples. This case underscores the importance of considering adenovirus infection in the differential diagnosis of hyperinflammatory syndromes in children, especially during periods of increased adenoviral activity. Further research is needed to understand the underlying mechanisms and develop appropriate management strategies for this novel manifestation.
