IACTSMS updates criteria for detecting probable MS
The International Advisory Committee on Clinical Trials in Multiple Sclerosis (IACTSMS) recently updated its criteria for detecting probable MS. The guidelines, led by Dr. Jeffrey A. Cohen, provide clarification on clinical and paraclinical warning flags for MS diagnosis. While there are diagnostic biomarkers for other illnesses, equivalent indicators for MS are still lacking. The authors emphasized clinical considerations for optic neuritis, pointing out that various illnesses can be confused with it. They also talked about how visual loss, optic disc edema, and retroorbital pain could be signs of something else. Optic neuropathy is more common in patients over the age of 50 than MS. The importance of optical coherence tomography and visual evoked potentials in differential diagnosis was stressed by the authors.
