IARC Working Group Evaluates Carcinogenicity of Aspartame, Methyleugenol, and Isoeugenol
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) evaluated the carcinogenicity of aspartame, methyleugenol, and isoeugenol in June 2023. Aspartame was classified as “possibly carcinogenic to humans,” while methyleugenol was classified as “probably carcinogenic to humans,” and isoeugenol was classified as “possibly carcinogenic to humans.” The evidence for cancer in humans was limited for aspartame and inadequate for methyleugenol and isoeugenol. The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives conducted a risk assessment exercise immediately following IARC’s meeting, including a review of the acceptable daily intake of aspartame.
